Refractive surgery is a set of surgical treatments that are used to modify the anatomy of the eye, and especially the cornea, to correct the refractive defects of astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia, and also presbyopia or eyestrain. This surgery makes the use of glasses or contact lenses no longer necessary.

Treatment can be done through lasers or with intraocular lenses. With the use of the laser, a change in thickness and curvature of the cornea is achieved that allows the eye to focus correctly on objects, thus correcting refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia or eyestrain. Intraocular lenses can also be used: ICL phakic lenses allow the lens to be preserved and are placed in front of the iris (anterior chamber) or between the iris and lens (posterior chamber). They are especially indicated in medium and high myopia.
